About Breast Implants

Breast implants are medical devices with a solid silicone, rubber shell. The shell may be filled with either saline solution (sterile salt water) or elastic silicone gel. Implants vary by filler and in size but there are other considerations such as texture, shape, profile and diameter.

Two methods of placement are available, with benefits and drawbacks to each. Implants may be placed directly behind the breast tissue or underneath the pectoralis muscle. The behind-the-muscle pocket adds a layer of tissue over the implant to disguise the implant edge and make it harder to feel, may decrease the risk of hardening, and puts a layer between the breast and the implant to help with mammography. The over-the-muscle location can give a more attractive shape, particularly when there is any sagging to the breast. There is more natural movement, better cleavage, and less interference with muscle movement. All these considerations will be discussed in depth by your board-certified plastic surgeon.

A variety of incision options are available as well, with the decision depending on your anatomy, your surgeon's recommendation, and your personal preference. The most popular incision methods in Atlanta for breast enlargement, for example, is the inframammary incision. Placed in the lower portion of the breast, just slightly away from the crease (where the breast meets the chest wall) this incision can be covered by even the slimmest bikini top.
