Breast Surgery: It’s Not Just for Women

Toned, muscular male chest

For most people, breast surgery is associated with women. Although breast augmentation remains a top procedure in Roswell, GA, and throughout the nation, I want to use this blog post to reduce some of the stigma and mystery around male breast surgery. Namely, male breast reduction surgery, a procedure that my colleagues and I perform with some frequency.

Gynecomastia, the benign enlargement of male breast tissue, is very common. In fact, many studies state that more than half of all men have gynecomastia to some degree. Although the condition may be related to weight or an underlying medical issue, often it develops without any clear cause.

Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, is an outpatient procedure that may be accomplished with liposuction, resection of excess tissue, or a combination of both procedures. In its more severe forms, excessive skin may also be a concern.

Generally speaking, male breast reduction patients are extremely pleased with their surgical results, just as their female counterparts are after breast augmentation. They no longer feel embarrassed by their bodies or reluctant to take off their shirts at the beach or pool. The key difference is that men are much more private about discussing the procedure.

I occasionally see patients who weren’t even aware that corrective surgery of this nature existed. They had resigned themselves to a lifetime of embarrassment, when in reality the procedure is straightforward and typically minor. In fact, most patients are back to work after only a couple of days. You can see a good example of the results that are possible in our before-and-after gallery.

Whether you want larger breasts, smaller breasts, or no breasts at all, it’s important to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon to help you achieve your goals.
